MethodHow this page is built
Real positions, real orbits, the data at each scale
Positions
The planets use NASA JPL's approximate Keplerian elements (Standish, valid 1800 to 2050). The Moon uses the low-precision lunar series of the Astronomical Almanac. Satellites are propagated live in the browser with SGP4 (satellite.js) from a CelesTrak orbital element snapshot. The Earth turns with Greenwich sidereal time and is lit by the real Sun.
Scale
Distances are true. Sizes are true up to the Moon, then planets are enlarged so they stay visible; the readout says by how much. True scale shows real sizes with distance labels. Past the planets the ruler switches to light-years.
Spacecraft
Spacecraft trajectories come from NASA JPL Horizons, sampled daily over each mission and thinned with cubic interpolation; landing sites from the official coordinates (the LRO camera team for the Moon). Each mission card links to its official page.
